This monumental Chiaramonti Niobid marble statue (180cm) is a masterfully hand-carved reconstruction created by our workshop, sculpted from 100% natural marble and faithfully inspired by the dramatic classical original. The sculpture captures one of the daughters of Niobe in a moment of intense movement and fear, as she attempts to escape the arrows of Apollo and Artemis—a powerful scene drawn from one of the most tragic myths of ancient Greece.
According to the myth, Niobe, Queen of Thebes, boasted of her fourteen children—seven sons and seven daughters—believing herself superior to Leto, who bore only two children to Zeus: Apollo and Artemis. Offended by this arrogance, the divine twins took vengeance, with Apollo striking down the sons and Artemis the daughters. This sculpture embodies that moment of divine retribution, portraying the Niobid in motion, her body twisting in a desperate attempt to flee, capturing both physical grace and emotional intensity.
The original work is believed to be a Roman copy from the age of Hadrian, itself derived from a larger Hellenistic sculptural group depicting the tragedy of the Niobids. Various versions of this group have survived, with one of the most complete ensembles preserved in the Uffizi Galleries in Florence. The sculpture was rediscovered in the 16th century at Hadrian’s Villa near Tivoli, during excavations organized by Cardinal Ippolito d’Este, further enhancing its historical and artistic significance.
Our 180cm reconstruction faithfully preserves the dynamic composition and expressive detail that define this masterpiece. The figure’s flowing drapery, twisting posture, and refined anatomy are meticulously carved by hand, conveying both elegance and dramatic tension. The use of natural marble enhances the sculpture’s timeless presence, with subtle veining and a luminous surface ensuring that each piece is entirely unique. Unlike resin or cast reproductions, genuine marble offers authenticity, durability, and a true museum-quality aesthetic.
Standing at an impressive 180cm tall, this Chiaramonti Niobid statue is ideal for galleries, museums, luxury interiors, architectural projects, and collector spaces. It serves as both a striking visual centerpiece and a profound narrative work, embodying themes of pride, punishment, fate, and human vulnerability within the framework of classical mythology.
This hand-carved natural marble reconstruction of the Chiaramonti Niobid is perfect for collectors, historians, and art enthusiasts seeking a sculpture rich in emotion, history, and artistic excellence. Owning this piece means bringing into your space a timeless expression of Hellenistic drama and classical craftsmanship, revived with precision and respect for its ancient origins.
