This evocative “Dying Niobid” marble statue (150cm) is a masterfully hand-carved reconstruction created by our workshop, sculpted from 100% natural marble and inspired by one of the most moving masterpieces of classical Greek art. The sculpture captures a young maiden at the very moment of her tragic end—her body collapsing toward the rocky ground, her back arched in pain as she struggles to remove the arrow lodged between her shoulders. This fleeting instant of suffering is transformed into a timeless work of art, where emotion, movement, and beauty are perfectly balanced.
The figure represents one of the daughters of Niobe, whose story stands among the most powerful tragedies in Greek mythology. Proud of her many children, Niobe provoked the anger of Leto, who commanded her divine children Apollo and Artemis to exact revenge. With their arrows, they struck down all of Niobe’s sons and daughters. This sculpture depicts one of those daughters immediately after her fatal injury, emphasizing not heroism, but the human vulnerability and emotional depth of the moment. Her youthful, still-developing form intensifies the pathos, contrasting innocence with inevitable fate.
Originally part of a larger sculptural group dating to around 440–430 BC, the Dying Niobid was likely created to decorate the pediment of a Greek temple, believed to be the Temple of Apollo Daphnephoros at Eretria. These figures formed a dramatic narrative ensemble, depicting the Niobids in various stages of flight, struggle, and collapse. Later transported to Rome, they were incorporated into the luxurious Horti Sallustiani, where art and landscape merged to create powerful visual storytelling within garden settings.
Our 150cm reconstruction faithfully preserves the dynamic composition and refined anatomical detail of the original. The twisting posture, the tension in the limbs, and the expressive gesture of the arms are meticulously hand-carved by skilled artisans, capturing both physical realism and emotional intensity. The sculpture reflects a pivotal moment in classical art, where balance and ideal beauty begin to give way to movement, drama, and expressive storytelling.
Crafted from natural marble, the sculpture features a luminous surface and subtle veining that enhance its depth and individuality, ensuring that each piece is entirely unique. Unlike modern cast reproductions, genuine marble offers authenticity, durability, and a true museum-quality presence, elevating the sculpture to a lasting work of art.
At 150cm tall, this piece is ideal for galleries, luxury interiors, gardens, and architectural spaces, where it serves as both a striking visual centerpiece and a profound narrative statement. It embodies themes of tragedy, beauty, fate, and the fragility of life, making it far more than a decorative object—it is a story captured in stone.
This hand-carved natural marble “Dying Niobid” is perfect for collectors and art enthusiasts who appreciate the emotional depth and historical significance of classical sculpture. Owning this piece means bringing into your space a timeless expression of ancient tragedy, artistic mastery, and enduring beauty, preserved forever in marble.
