This elegant “Cupid Playing the Lyre” marble sculpture is a masterfully hand-carved reconstruction created by our workshop, sculpted from 100% natural marble and inspired by the neoclassical masterpiece of Bertel Thorvaldsen. Originally conceived as part of the sculptural group “The Three Graces and Cupid” (1817–1818), this charming figure captures Cupid (Amor) in his youthful, divine innocence, seated gracefully as he plays the lyre.
In classical mythology, Cupid (Eros) is the god of love, desire, and emotional connection, often depicted as a child to symbolize the purity and unpredictable nature of affection. In this interpretation, music becomes a metaphor for love itself—harmonious, emotional, and capable of moving both gods and mortals. The lyre, an instrument closely associated with Apollo and divine harmony, reinforces the idea that love and music share the same celestial origin, both capable of shaping human emotion and experience.
Thorvaldsen’s neoclassical vision transforms this mythological subject into a scene of serene beauty and balanced composition. The seated posture of Cupid, combined with the gentle curves of his youthful form and the delicate interaction with the instrument, reflects the ideals of harmony, proportion, and restrained emotion that define neoclassical sculpture. The result is a composition that is both tender and timeless, celebrating innocence, artistry, and divine inspiration.
Our 180cm reconstruction faithfully preserves these qualities through meticulous hand carving. Every detail—from the soft expression of Cupid’s face to the finely rendered strings of the lyre—is carefully shaped by skilled artisans. The composition emphasizes smooth transitions, graceful lines, and a natural sense of rhythm, allowing the figure to feel alive even in stillness.
The use of natural marble enhances the sculpture’s classical presence, with its luminous surface and subtle veining ensuring that each piece is entirely unique. Unlike modern cast reproductions, genuine marble offers authenticity, durability, and a true museum-quality aesthetic, making it suitable for both interior and architectural display.
This sculpture is ideal for luxury interiors, galleries, gardens, music rooms, and refined architectural spaces, where it serves as both a decorative centerpiece and a symbolic representation of love, harmony, and artistic expression.
This hand-carved natural marble reconstruction of “Cupid Playing the Lyre” is perfect for collectors and art enthusiasts who appreciate neoclassical beauty and mythological storytelling. Owning this piece means bringing into your space a timeless expression of love, music, and divine harmony, preserved forever in stone.
